Sunrise in Wescarp

This is Kortrax seen coming up over the Central Wescarp Range from the peak of East Nvednmere. The clearing a few miles away holds a hill town named Yoonbarla. The town does have an inn and a couple public taps but they are hidden by the flank of West Nvendnmere. In the distance it is almost possible to make out the city of Hazorpean out on the Lhar. The city and its dam are thirty miles from here.

The climb to this point can be made in hiking boots, but we are actually several miles from Yoonbarla and a predator is possible at this point. Many locals will come up here unarmed however. Don't eat the lvinch berries, they are loaded with a caffeine-like substance. They're red now but turn orange and yellow as they warm up. There are nice purple yoonberries at the edge of the forest that are safe and tasty. The lavender edge-blooms are only starting to open, but they will be open before you get down off the mountain.

Bring a jacket if you come up here for the dawn, it was about 47F when we were here. It takes almost three hours to hike up here from Yoonbarla, so we left when it was barely light. It's 76F at this time in Hazorpean, like the whole valley floor.

If you are a serious climber, the Kendaids are a day's hike from here and the peaks are twice as high above the valley floor. It is worth coming this way to see the falls that descend in a canyon down the lower face of Nvednmere and into a pretty little valley between the toes of the mountain, a mile and a half below the village. The trail thru the canyon cannot take a wheeled vehicle and kedas are loath to walk it, but it can be made on foot if you're careful (and in decent shape). The path goes behind two waterfalls, including the one the high-road bridge goes over right at the east end of town.

The archwoods of the present town are grown on top of the ruins of an older Dwarven village that was carved into the banks of the gullies the stream was once in. From this distance they hide all evidence of the paved street that runs beside the brook and the shops that line it. If you hike up and spend the dark in the village you will find yourself comfortable and welcome and won't need to sleep alone.

The present town is dwarfed by the ruins of Oliar's castle, which has been abandoned since before the birth of Christ. Oliar was responsible for bringing eternal youth to this area as soon as it was available. He made several pilgramages to the Kassikan and brought back formulas for improved agriculture as well as improved medicine. He invested most of the fortune he earned from that in the huge edifice who's shadow looms over the town today. The townspeople have been using it as a source of building material and as a movie set since then.
